1. Cấu trúc although, though, even though, in spite of, despite

Although, Though, Even though, In spite of, Despite là các liên từ (từ để nối/ conjunction) diễn tả sự đối lập giữa hai vế câu trong Tiếng Anh. Mặc dù năm liên từ trên về mặt ngữ nghĩa giống nhau nhưng xét về mặt công thức thì chia chúng thành 2 nhóm như sau:

a. Cấu trúc Although, Though, Even though

Cấu trúc:

Despite/In spite of + Noun/Noun Phrase/V-ing, S + V + …

S + V + …despite/in spite of + Noun/Noun Phrase/V-ing.

Ví dụ:

- Although she got up early, she was late for the first train. (Dù dậy sớm nhưng cô đã đến trễ chuyến tàu đầu tiên.)

- Though she was very busy, she could answer the phone. (Dù rất bận nhưng cô ấy có thể nghe điện thoại)

- Even though he is an excellent doctor, he can’t cure liver cancer. (Dù là một bác sĩ xuất sắc nhưng anh ấy không thể chữa khỏi bệnh ung thư gan.)

Lưu ý: Cả 3 liên từ trên đều có thể đứng ở đầu câu hoặc giữa câu. Khi sử dụng ở đầu câu, ta phải thêm dấu “,” khi kết thúc mệnh đề.

b. Despite và In spite of

Despite và In spite of đều mang nghĩa là “mặc dù” giống cấu trúc Although, Though và Even though. Tuy nhiên giữa chúng có sự khác biệt về mặt ngữ pháp.

Cấu trúc:

Despite/In spite of the fact that + Clause, Main clause

Ví dụ:

- Despite the narrow streets, many people drive cars in this city. (Bất chấp đường phố chật hẹp, nhiều người lái xe ô tô trong thành phố này.)

- In spite of the high prices, my son insist on going to the movies. (Bất chấp giá cao, các con trai tôi vẫn nhất quyết đi xem phim.)

Giống với cấu trúc although/ though even though, Despite và In spite of đều có thể đứng đầu câu hoặc giữa hai mệnh đề.

Tuy nhiên điểm khác biệt của Despite và In spite of là sử dụng với cụm từ ““the fact that” với cấu trúc như sau:

Despite/ In spite of + the fact that + S₁ + V₁, S₂ + V₂.

Ví dụ:

- I could not eat in spite of the fact that I was very hungry. (Tôi không thể ăn mặc dù thực tế là tôi rất đói.)

- Despite the fact that she does not have much money, she still buys an expensive dress. (Dù không có nhiều tiền nhưng cô vẫn sắm cho mình một chiếc váy đắt tiền.)
